| dc.description | The largest specimen in the collection of the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (MCNB), the skeleton of a Fin Whale Balaenoptera physalus (MZB 83-3084), was suspended as a mounted exhibit from the ceiling of the Museum’s temporary exhibition hall from 1986 onwards. However, in 2009 the MCNB was modernised and enlarged with the addition of a new building, which involved the moving of the skeleton from where it presided over the staircase of the main hall of the public entrance to the new building to be mounted as if in the act of diving. The 100-year-old bones of its skeleton were dismantled, all bones conserved, moved in mounted sections to the new building, and rehung there from the ceiling. The whole project took two years to complete and culminated in the final challenge of suspending the skeleton in its new position. In the end, the complexity of the task was far greater than we first imagined due to an unforeseen incident during the dismantling process, the great quantity of dirt and fat on the bones, and the delicate work required to position the fragile skeleton above the staircase. In order to ensure that the skeleton was safely mounted and posed no danger to visitors, numerous specialists had to be employed on the project. Greater coordination then expected was required during the work and many working days were long and highly intense. The fruitful teamwork that characterised the whole project was the key to ensuring that this much-beloved specimen continues to be displayed for visitors to enjoy. | dc.description | L’exemplar més gran de la col•lecció del Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (MCNB), un esquelet de rorqual comú (MZB 83-3084 Balaenoptera physalus Linnaeus, 1758), estava muntat i penjat al sostre des de l’any 1986, on presidia la sala d’exposicions temporals. El 2009 una nova seu es va incorporar al MCNB, fet que permeté ampliar les superfícies per a exposicions i per a l’activitat pública. El projecte de modernització suposà l’adaptació de l’edifici nou a usos museístics, una nova exposició permanent de ciències naturals i el trasllat de l’emblemàtic esquelet muntat de rorqual. Es va decidir que l’esquelet presidiria l’entrada de l’edifici, una zona de lliure accés. I que s’instal•laria suspès sobre les escales del vestíbul en una posició d’immersió. Els ossos centenaris d’aquest esquelet muntat foren desarticulats i restaurats en la seva totalitat. Posteriorment es va articular el cos en vàries parts, que va ser traslladades i articulades entre elles a l’edifici nou i subjectades al sostre. La magnitud del projecte i les incidències ocorregudes durant una de les fases del procés van comportar una important reestructuració d’aquest, la inclusió de noves empreses i un esforç significatiu de coordinació entre totes les parts. El projecte amb la balena va durar uns dos anys, va comportar varis trasllats d’edifici, i un repte per a subjectar-lo en la nova posició acordada. Gran part del projecte va ser filmat i fotografiat, es van elaborar memòries escrites de les feines fetes, per tal que quedi constància de la restauració i del muntatge actual, que facilitin la presa de decisions que es puguin prendre en el futur per a aquest exemplar. En definitiva un treball coral que va arribar a bon port permetent l’exposició pública d’aquest emblemàtic exemplar per al gaudi de la ciutadania.
