It is a leading port in the Euro- Mediterranean region and the leading Spanish port in terms of the value of its goods, turnover, import/export cargo and international connections. ● In 2024, amidst rising international protectionism, the Port of Barcelona handled 67.8 million tonnes of goods (an 8.6% year-on-year increase), while container traffic reached 3.9 million TEUs, marking a strong growth of 18.3% and a record high. Barcelona’s cruise-ship market remains the leading port in Europe by number of passengers, notching up a new record of 3,656,981 cruise-ship passengers. ● The Port of Barcelona is the most diversified in the Mediterranean and has significant added value thanks to both the value of goods passing through it (€118.1 billion in 2024), making it the leading Spanish port in this regard, and its major logistics capacity, with a million square metres of storage space. ICTs ● Venture capital firm Atomico’s State of European Tech 2024 report ranks Barcelona as the 8th-best European city for attracting international technology investment from 2015 to 2024, with 6.3 billion dollars invested, a sixfold increase on the previous decade. During this period, Barcelona has remained within the European top 20, leading the Spanish technology ecosystem. ● In 2024, female digital talent reached a record high, accounting for 31.6% of ICT professionals in Barcelona – up by one percentage point on the previous year and above the European average. ● Catalonia notched up a record 160 tech hubs in 2024, practically quadrupling the figure from 2016, according to the Tech Hubs Overview 2025 report. These hubs generate an economic impact of €2.9 billion, and in 2024 their activity focused on health and technological product development, with deep tech and artificial intelligence featuring prominently. In 2025, Barcelona was chosen by UNESCO as the host of the new Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre (DCC), an institution aimed at promoting a sustainable and equitable ocean economy within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030. 1. The life and health sciences sector in the Catalan “BioRegion” is a driver for innovation and socio-economic development in Catalonia, and the Barcelona area is recognised as one of Europe’s most promising hubs for health research and innovation. ● Catalonia is a pioneer in the health sector, with 5,368 active clinical trials, placing it 5th in Europe and 8th worldwide, and accounting for 87.3% of all trials conducted in Spain. Moreover, Catalonia is home to 93 research centres and 79 pharmaceutical production plants, and is Spain’s second largest exporter of pharmaceutical products, accounting for 41% of the national total. Foreign company investments in the BioRegion have reached a total of €2.1 billion between 2020 and 2024, with AstraZeneca standing out as the main investor. The Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Theranostics (Fraunhofer SPAIN) will specialise in bioengineering and advanced therapies in the healthcare sector. ● Barcelona is moving forward with the construction of a University Hospital Campus which will include the facilities of the future Hospital Clínic. In the Collserola area, construction of the first unit of the new Caixa Research Institute is expected to be completed in 2025.
