Abstract: Since the beginning of mineral collections, they contained specimens that may present potential health risks. Even so, due to ignorance, they were classically manipulated without any kind of prevention. The progress of knowledge in fields such as medicine, physics, chemistry or even mineralogy, has demonstrated that this type of samples can be dangerous during long exposition times and the lack of security measures to avoid the direct contact, inhalation or ingestion of particles. These samples are radioactive minerals and also toxic specimens; those include asbestos and minerals that contain chemical elements such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium or antimony. With the aim to ensure optimal and safe conditions, the MCNB has carried out management protocols to guarantee the total safety of workers, scientists and visitors during the conservation, manipulation and potential exhibition of this type of movable geoheritage. Keywords: asbestos, collections, mineralogy, movable geoheritage, radioactivity
